Project Overview
The AI Supply Chain Optimizer is an AI-powered application designed to streamline logistics and distribution by finding the most efficient routes for deliveries. By leveraging AI to analyze factors like distance, time, and multiple stops, this system helps businesses reduce fuel costs, save time, and improve overall operational efficiency.
My Role: UX Designer, Logistics Analyst, AI Solutions Designer (as a solo project)
1. The Problem: The Inefficiency of Manual Route Planning
For many businesses, especially those with complex delivery networks, route planning is a time-consuming and inefficient task. Manually determining the most optimal route for multiple deliveries often leads to longer travel times, increased fuel consumption, and missed delivery windows. The core problem was to create a tool that could automate this process, providing businesses with a clear, data-driven solution to optimize their logistics.
2. The Solution: An Intelligent Route Planning Hub
The solution was to build a user-friendly application that simplifies the process of route optimization. The system features an intuitive workflow:
Route Planner: The user can easily input a start location, multiple delivery stops, and an end location. The interface is simple and clean, with the ability to add and remove stops as needed.
AI-Powered Optimization: With a single click, the AI analyzes the input data to calculate the most efficient route, considering the distance between each point.
Optimized Itinerary: The application then presents a clear, easy-to-read itinerary with a new, optimized order of stops, along with the total distance and estimated time. This output can also be exported for easy use by drivers.
This integrated approach saves significant time and money, and provides a clear audit trail for every delivery route.
3. My Design Process: Building a Seamless User Experience
My design process focused on building a user interface that was not only functional but also intuitive for users of all technical skill levels, from logistics managers to delivery drivers.
User Research: I spoke with logistics coordinators and business owners to understand their current route planning methods. Their main concerns were the manual data entry and the lack of a reliable way to verify if a route was truly "optimal." This highlighted the need for a system that was both easy to use and trustworthy.
Information Architecture: The UI was designed with a clear, logical flow. The left panel is for data input and the right panel is dedicated to the AI's output, with a clear distinction between the "Route Planner" and the "Optimized Itinerary." This layout allows users to easily see the impact of the AI's calculations.
Prototyping & Visual Design: The UI was designed to be clean, professional, and non-distracting. I used a simple color scheme and clear typography to ensure readability. The use of a distinct button for "Optimize Route" provides a clear call to action, while the ability to "Export" the itinerary provides a seamless transition from the digital tool to the real-world application.
4. The Final Product: A Clear Roadmap for Logistics Excellence
The final application is a powerful and intuitive tool that serves as a valuable assistant to logistics professionals. It is not about replacing human expertise but about augmenting it, allowing users to handle a higher volume of work with greater accuracy. The design prioritizes clarity and efficiency, making the AI's complex analysis accessible and trustworthy.
Key Learnings & Outcomes:
Simplicity in Complexity: The design successfully translates a highly complex backend process—the Traveling Salesperson Problem—into a simple, intuitive workflow that is easy for users to understand and navigate.
Solving a Specific Pain Point: By focusing on the clear and urgent problem of manual route planning, the application provides immediate and measurable value to its target users.
Transparency and Trust: The design makes the AI's process transparent by clearly displaying the optimized itinerary, giving users confidence in the system's recommendations.
This project demonstrates how a user-centered design approach can be applied to create a powerful AI tool that is not only a technological solution but a practical and indispensable business asset.
